How to Write Scripts That Work Well With AI Voiceovers
Practical writing techniques that help text-to-speech tools produce clearer, more natural narration for videos, lessons, and podcasts.
Text-to-speech tools read exactly what you give them. A script written for the eye often sounds stiff when spoken, while a script written for the ear can make generated narration noticeably easier to follow. These techniques apply to most AI voice tools, including the ones in our directory.
Write for listening, not reading
Listeners cannot skim back. Keep one idea per sentence, prefer everyday words, and place the most important information at the end of a sentence, where it naturally receives emphasis.
- Aim for short to medium sentences.
- Replace parentheses and asides with separate sentences.
- Read the script aloud once before generating audio.
Spell out what should be spoken
Numbers, abbreviations, and symbols can be read in unexpected ways. Write them the way you want them pronounced.
- “Twenty twenty-six” instead of a bare year when context is unclear.
- “For example” instead of “e.g.”
- Product names and acronyms written as they should sound, at least for the first test.
Use punctuation to shape pacing
Commas, full stops, and paragraph breaks are the simplest way to control rhythm. A new paragraph usually produces a longer pause, which is useful between topics. Many tools also offer their own settings for speed, pauses, or emphasis; check the provider’s documentation for what is supported.
Generate in sections
Split long scripts into scenes or paragraphs. Shorter sections are easier to regenerate when a single line needs correction, and they make it simpler to match narration to video edits.
Review with the final audience in mind
- Listen on the device your audience is likely to use.
- Check names, technical terms, and calls to action carefully.
- Ask someone unfamiliar with the script whether anything was unclear.
Use voices responsibly
Only use a custom or cloned voice when you have the necessary rights and consent, and follow each provider’s usage policies. When in doubt, choose one of the tool’s standard voices.
